Kilmaurs Village and Church |

Kilmaurs is a village in South West Scotland, about 3 miles north of Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire and 20 miles south of Glasgow. Reliable authorities tell us that the ancient church of Kilmaurs was dedicated to St. Maura, a Scottish saint who is said to have died in 899. She lived and worked on the isle of Little Cumbrae, and was thought to be the daughter of a Scottish Chieftain Her commemoration day is on the 2 November The ancient Barony of Kilmaurs was conferred by the De Morville family on the first of the Cunningham's in the middle of the 12th century. Later early in the 16th century the village was created a Burgh of Barony By James V. The Charter being granted 15th November 1527. The "Jougs" pre dates 1709, when a second storey was added to the former building, the spire was added in 1800 when there were repairs made to the structure. Today Kilmaurs is now much larger with a surge in new house building, Even so it has not lost it's village feel. With a direct link to Glasgow by rail and the completion of the M77 motorway linking Kilmaurs to Glasgow and Ayr. The Ayrshire coast is only a short drive away. |
